Paris Olympics 2024 — Day 8
There was joy for Olympic veterans Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky on Saturday but bitter disappointment for Games debutant Sha’Carri Richardson, who came second in the women’s 100m final.
The 24-year-old sprinter was beaten by Julien Alfred, who made history as St. Lucia’s first ever medalist at a Games. America’s Melissa Jefferson came third.
It was a better evening in France for Ledecky, who won the 800m freestyle swimming gold, the 4th straight time she has won the event. It also brought her career total up to nine Olympic gold medals, which ties her with Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina for the most all-time by a female Olympian.
Biles meanwhile won her tenth Olympic medal — and seventh gold — by winning the vault title in emphatic fashion. Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade took silver and American Jade Carey got bronze.
Today’s action also saw the USWNT defeat Japan in the women’s soccer and the US men’s basketball team emerge victorious against Puerto Rico.

Beach Volleyball: Budinger/Evans moving on
Former NBA player Chase Budinger and his beach volleyball partner Miles Evans have kept their Olympic medal dreams alive. The U.S. pair is advancing to the knockout round after sweeping Australians Thomas Hodges and Zachery Schubert 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) in the men's “lucky loser” round.
Budinger and Evans limited their mistakes, making just three attacking errors compared to the Australians’ nine. Budinger — with his 6-foot-7 frame — dominated the net, blocking four shots for points while Australia scored off just one block.
The American duo was 1-2 in Pool F, and thanks to an earlier win by the Netherlands, finished third in pool play to avoid elimination and make it to today's match.
Now, they’re through to the Round of 16 along with the three other U.S. beach volleyball teams. Budinger and Evans face a tough opponent next in Norwegians Anders Mol and Christian Sørum on Monday at 8 a.m. ET. Mol and Sørum swept all three of their Pool B matches.

Basketball: Men's bracket is set
The bracket for the quarterfinals and beyond in the men's Olympic basketball tournament is set.
On one side of the draw, the top-seeded United States will play Brazil (3:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday), while Serbia will play Australia (8:30 a.m.). The winner of those two games will play each other to go to the gold medal game. On the other side, it is Germany versus Greece (5 a.m.) and Canada versus France (noon).
3x3 Basketball: U.S. women advance to semifinals
Props should be paid this evening to the U.S. women’s 3x3 basketball team. When it lost its first three games of Olympic competition, the team and its coaches were excoriated for poor play and for the construction of the team, which seemed to pale in comparison to the gold medal-winning 2021 U.S. team, which featured WNBA stars Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Stefanie Dolson and Allisha Gray. But tonight, the 2024 team won its fifth straight game, defeating China, 21-13 to improve to 5-3 in the tournament, and qualified for the tournament semifinals Monday night, still having a chance to defend its gold.
The U.S. women had to win four games in the last two days, including over the host France Friday and twice Saturday over China, to get through the play-in round and make the semis. In the second game, the U.S. scored seven of the last nine points of the game, clinching the win on a Dearica Hamby two-pointer, the last of her nine points.
The Americans finished as the 3 seed in the draw, and will play second-seeded Spain in one semifinal Monday evening. The top-seeded German women will play fourth-seeded Canada in the other semifinal.
Soccer: Brazil defeats France 1-0, advances to semifinals
Brazil has done it! They had to survive nearly 19 minutes of stoppage time, but Gabi Portilho's goal has sent them to the semifinals and guaranteed Marta's return at the Olympics. The host nation will rue plenty of missed chances, including a penalty. Despite the massive amount of stoppage time, somehow Brazil is the only team to advance not needing extra time or penalty kicks to get it done in the quarterfinals.
The semifinals will take place on Tuesday and feature two rematches from the group stage:
- Brazil will face Spain after losing 2-0 to them in their group-stage finale after Marta was sent off.
- The USWNT will face Germany after beating them 4-1 a week ago.
Basketball: Serbia overcome South Sudan
The Olympic men's basketball tournament quarterfinals are now set after Serbia defeated South Sudan 96-85 in the final game of pool play. Bogdan Bogdanović led Serbia with 28 points as it held off a spirited South Sudan effort to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
South Sudan is eliminated; it needed a win or a loss by two or fewer points to advance. Still, the Bright Stars players, as well as federation president Luol Deng, leaves France with their heads held high after beating Puerto Rico and putting a scare into Team USA and Serbia. In the end, though, Greece and Brazil advance as the third-place teams with the best two point differentials.
These will be the quarterfinal matchups.
- USA (top seed) vs. Brazil
- Serbia vs. Australia
- Canada vs. France
- Germany (second seed) vs. Greece
The only thing left to determine is which side of the draw the middle two are on.
Swimming: Katie Ledecky on her LA 2028 chances
Katie Ledecky is keeping her options open when it comes to attempting to win an incredible fifth straight Olympic medal in the 800 free in Los Angeles in 2028.
💬 “I would love to, but it’s not easy. I’ll take it year by year and give it everything I’ve got for as long as I have left in me.”

Soccer: Late Brazil goal gives Marta hope
In the final women's soccer quarterfinal, Brazil has found a go-ahead goal against host nation France late thanks to Gabi Portilho. She scored on Brazil’s first shot on target, and it is just the second international goal she has scored.
The cameras immediately found Marta, watching on and celebrating wildly. She may just get another shot yet to take the field in these Olympics.
Basketball: Serbia vs South Sudan going down to the wire
Carlik Jones’ spinning righty hook shot off the glass at the buzzer cuts South Sudan's deficit against Serbia to 72-67 after three quarters.
South Sudan must now win the fourth quarter by three or more points to become the first African team to ever advance to the knockout round of the Olympics men's basketball tournament.
Soccer: Defending champions knocked out
Canada have been knocked out of the Paris Olympics women’s football tournament after being defeated by Germany on penalties following a 0-0 draw at the quarterfinal stage.
In a match that saw no goals in normal time, Canada missed two spot-kicks to ensure they will not reclaim the gold medal they won at the Tokyo Games.
Adriana Leon and Ashley Lawrence were denied by Ann-Katrin Berger, who scored the decisive penalty to ensure Germany secured a 4-2 shootout win.
Basketball: Serbia leading South Sudan
At halftime, Serbia leads South Sudan 47-44 in an entertaining and crucial final game of pool play. Serbian stars Nikola Jokić and Bogdan Bogdanović have combined for 26 of Serbia’s points, but South Sudan is hanging tough with a balanced scoring effort.
The Bright Stars have a chance to make history and become the first African team to reach the knockout round of an Olympic hoops tournament. They must win OR lose by two points or fewer. Serbia is through unless it loses by 23 points or more, but a loss forces a difficult quarterfinal matchup against undefeated Germany.
If South Sudan wins by less than 23 points, Greece are eliminated. If Serbia wins by three or more points, South Sudan is out.
Tennis: Lorenzo Musetti wins Olympic men's singles bronze
Lorenzo Musetti continued his stellar summer with a bronze medal victory in men’s singles Saturday, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. It is Musetti’s first Olympic medal of his career and he will be on the podium Sunday, joining Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
Musetti, the world No. 16, started the match strong with an opening break of Auger-Aliassime’s serve. Despite getting broken at 4-3, Musetti never wavered. He responded with an immediate break back of Auger-Aliassime’s serve, his second of the set, en route to winning the opener 6-4.
Auger-Aliassime, who won bronze in mixed doubles Friday, raised his level in the second set. The Canadian served at 84 percent in the second set, firing five aces and winning 30 points. Musetti only won 19 points and appeared flustered throughout the set. Auger-Aliassime broke Musetti twice, taking the second set 6-1 and forcing a decider.
The third set was close, as Musetti and Auger-Aliassime exchanged service holds. But with Musetti up 4-3, he took advantage of a couple of Auger-Aliassime unforced errors. Musetti broke to go up 5-3, before serving it out to capture the bronze medal.

Swimming: Katie Ledecky wins again
Katie Ledecky of the United States has won the 800-meter freestyle swimming gold, the 4th time she has won the same event.

Basketball: USA ‘not getting ahead of themselves’, says Curry
Steph Curry was interviewed after Team USA’s 104-83 victory over Puerto Rico and the Golden State Warriors point guard said his side expects to be tested in the knockout stages of the men’s basketball tournament.
💬 “Winning a gold medal, whatever year you look in the history books, maybe besides the 1992 team, everyone has had a battle somewhere.
“Whether it's shots not falling or it's a team that is playing amazing, you gotta grind out a win. I think we've been uncomfortable a couple of times in the exhibition series and even through spurts of the Serbia and South Sudan games when we can feel it.
“When things get a little tight, how do you respond? We have to just worry about one game at a time, though, because styles are so different from country to country and team to team. So you can't really get too ahead of yourself, but we know we can beat everybody.”
Soccer: Canada subs injecting energy
The Canadian substitutions have injected an offensive energy into this match. Since Andy Spence sent in three subs at the 57-minute mark, Canada has had seven of its shot attempts in under 20 minutes. In the first 57 minutes of this match?
Just four shots attempts total from the Canadians.
In the last five minutes of play alone, Canada has taken four shots.
Athletics: No Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 100m final
The field for the women’s 100-meter final is set. But there is no Jamaican icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. She withdrew from the Olympic 100m competition shortly before her semi-final.
The 37-year-old, a five-time world and two-time Olympic 100m champion, has said this will be her final Olympic Games.
- Julien Alfred, Saint Lucia (10.84)

Boxing: Imane Khelif guaranteed a medal
Following days of furor surrounding the Olympic eligibility of women’s boxer Imane Khelif, the Algerian’s quarterfinal bout against Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori went on as planned Saturday.
The result: a Khelif victory, an emotional outpouring and a frenzied media circus.
Khelif won in a unanimous decision at North Paris Arena, taking each round of the three-round quarterfinal in the 66-kilogram (145-pound) division. Because Olympic boxing does not have a bronze medal bout, she is now assured a medal in the 2024 Games, no matter what happens in her semifinal.
For all the controversy surrounding the day, the fight went by without incident.
Soccer: Canada subs out Jessie Fleming
Canada is the first to make a sub in this game. Captain Jessie Fleming, who took a bit of a hit during a 50/50 ball toward the end of the first half, is taken off and Janine Beckie is put on in her place.
No subs for Germany.
Soccer: A stalemate in Marseille
Halftime mercifully comes in Marseille, where it's a balmy 87 degrees and Germany and Canada have played to a 0-0 half.
With no substitutions and only one true water break through the first half, you could tell that in those final minutes, players were really just trying to make it to halftime.
Germany jumped out early on this one to try and set the tone and control the play, but Canada hung on and settled in a bit more to what it wanted to do in the latter stages of that half.
Still, no goals. Will be interesting to see what adjustments Canada and Germany make out of the half to find some kind of a spark.
