If one does not look to Emily to adhere too faithfully to historical truth or, indeed, to depict what actual writing is like, then it is a satisfying—or at least benign—story. Content collapsed. “Emily” is a good, engrossing watch, and it avoids most (but not all) of the genre's pitfalls.

In this semi-fictional account, Emily Brontë desires personal and artistic freedom but struggles within the boundaries of her family and society. She finds a way to channel her creative ability into writing a novel.

The movie holds gothic tones like 'Wuthering Heights', with a particularly spooky scene involving a creepy mask, Emily's wild imagination and an almost possession of her dead mother.

It's rated TV-MA by Netflix and Common Sense Media actually OK'ed the series for teens 15 and older. In terms of the material, Emily in Paris can be best compared to a show like Gossip Girl — so you probably won't want your little kids to be watching it, but the high-school crowd will likely eat it up.

People fight, men target and attack women, there are scenes of breaking and entering, and people get bloody injuries. Characters also kiss, have (nonexplicit) sex, drink (sometimes to falling-down excess), and use drugs (cocaine). Language is strong and includes "f--k," "damn," and more.

So everything that happens in the film — like you take the mask, for instance, the mask was a real object the Brontë's had. And then when I was developing it, I thought that could actually be a really great symbol for Emily's creativity, it's connected to the mother, connected to the feminine.
